Facial peels, sometimes referred to as chemical peels, are skin rejuvenation services designed to improve the texture and tone of the skin where they are applied. They are a great way to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells while bringing forth newer, more youthful skin from underneath. Dr. Nicole Battaglioli and her team at Kore MD Health and Wellness in Atlanta, Georgia, are here to educate patients on the various depths of peels available.
Three different types of chemical peels
Superficial. The superficial facial peel is the mildest, non-invasive peel that only removes the uppermost layer of skin. It is typically made with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). It treats minor skin concerns such as discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles, and mild acne. This peel requires little to no downtime and can be done in a dermatologist’s office or at home with at-home peeling kits.
Medium. The medium facial peel penetrates deeper into the skin layers, targeting more serious skin issues like moderate acne scarring, sun damage, and deep wrinkles. These peels usually contain trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or glycolic acid. The recovery time for a medium peel is longer than a superficial peel, and it often requires more than one treatment session to achieve the desired results.
Deep. The deep facial peel is the most intense form of chemical peel, penetrating the deeper layers of skin to target severe skin conditions such as deep wrinkles, sun damage, and significant scarring. These peels are typically made with phenol or high concentrations of TCA. They can only be performed by trained professionals in a medical setting due to their strength and potential side effects, including permanent skin lightening. Recovery time for a deep peel can take several weeks and may require pain medication.
What are the benefits of facial peels?
There are several benefits to having facial peels performed, especially at a medical spa under the care of a professional. These include:
Improved skin texture and tone. Facial peels help to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and stimulate natural collagen production, resulting in smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin.
Reduced signs of aging. Facial peels can help reduce the visible signs of aging and give the skin a more youthful appearance by targeting fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage.
Acne treatment. Chemical peels effectively treat mild to moderate acne by exfoliating the skin and reducing excess oil production.
Minimized appearance of scars. Deep chemical peels significantly reduce the appearance of scarring from acne or injuries by promoting new skin cell growth.
Customized treatment options. With different types and strengths of chemical peels available, a professional can tailor the treatment to your specific skin concerns and needs.
Minimal downtime. Depending on the type of peel chosen, superficial and medium peels require little to no downtime, making them convenient for those with busy schedules.
Cost-effective. Compared to other cosmetic procedures, facial peels are relatively affordable and can provide noticeable results after just one session.
Boosted confidence. Clearer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin can improve self-confidence and overall well-being.
