Lasers are a powerful “tool” that complements our talented team at the office of Kore MD Health and Wellness in Atlanta, Georgia. They may be used to do everything from brightening the skin to softening spider veins. They may even be used to improve the appearance of that regretful tattoo or to get rid of unwanted hair once and for all. Below, our team is happy to shine a light on the five steps to being hair-free and carefree once and for all with laser-assisted treatment.

Step No. 1: The consultation

All treatments at our office start with a consultation. Our double Board-certified physician, Dr. Nicole Battaglioli, will discuss your concerns with you during your visit. She will also take a closer look at your skin and those concerns. Thanks to advancements in laser technology, a diverse range of patients can be treated safely and effectively. Additionally, lasers may be used to remove unwanted or excess hair on the face and many different body parts.

Step No. 2: Preparation

If laser treatment is right for you, we will go over everything you should expect at each stage of the process. In the days and weeks before treatment, we generally recommend avoiding UV exposure and using self-tanning lotions. Since the light from the laser “seeks out” pigment in the hair follicles and skin, tanning of any kind can increase your risk of complications (such as discoloration or pigment-related irregularities). Likewise, while shaving is fine, it is advised to refrain from waxing, tweezing, and using depilatory creams. You should also avoid using retinoids and other skincare products with ingredients that increase photosensitivity. The day before, it is advised to shave the treatment areas. This step makes it easier for the laser to locate the hair follicles and, in turn, to damage them. So, new hairs can no longer grow in the treatment area.

Step No. 3: Treatment

Laser hair reduction or hair removal is not a one-and-done treatment. The total number of treatments needed to achieve lasting hair reduction or complete smoothness depends on factors such as the thickness of your hair and the areas to be treated. Because of hair growth, around six to eight sessions may be required. We must target and destroy the follicles during that active stage of hair growth. Since hair grows in cycles, we cannot treat everything all at once.

Step No. 4: After-care

A soothing moisturizer, cold compress, and/or hydrocortisone can help ease irritation, which can look like a sunburn at the treatment sites for a few days. It’s important to avoid sun exposure to further minimize irritation. Remove any hairs between treatments, but always avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, and depilatories. Any harsh products (such as perfumes or scented soaps and skincare) should also be avoided.

Step No. 5: Maintenance

Lasers support lasting results. However, “touch-ups” may be necessary to maintain results. Such long-term maintenance also depends on your starting point and whether you received more treatments to remove hair completely or were seeking permanent reduction (rather than removal). To find out more about what to expect at every stage, schedule a consultation at the office of Kore MD Health and Wellness today. Our Atlanta, GA, team may be reached at (404) 623-2143.
